New Zealand passes Gay Marriage Bill

Bless those New Zealanders who have had the courage to do what our political leaders in Australia are yet to come around to. Same-sex marriage will become legal in New Zealand on 19 August 2013.

"A Bill for the legalisation was passed by the New Zealand House of Representatives on 17 April 2013, 77 votes to 44 in its third reading and received Royal Assent on 19 April 2013, with entry into force 4 months later to allow time for the Department of Internal Affairs to make the necessary changes for marriage licensing." Wikipedia

At the news of the  77 to 44 vote win guests in the Gallery of the Parliament burst into applause and then into the beautiful Maori love song Pokarekare Ana. See it here.

I've known and loved this song all my life and still join in with gusto when I hear it played. Though on this occasion I was crying with joy rather than singing.

And Elephants Child has a link to the funny speech by the Member for Pakuranga.

    1. Di, That was such a great speech, very funny. I didn't know he had it in him...
Oh my gosh, poor Andrea. How very unfortunate. Not fair.

  2. The video going around of Louisa Wall being congratulated is wonderful. But the Physics talk by Lockwood Smith - not sure, as he's been in Parliament way too long and has caused quite a few controversies in his time. Still, it was the first funny thing I heard him say and a good antidote to the fire-and-brimstone crowd.

    1. I'd almost forgotten about Lockwood Smith - obviously too long away from NZ. Well, at least he's done one thing I can approve of...

  5. i watched one of the MP's speeches that went viral (for good reason!) on you-tube.... talk about a fantastic political speech.... funny, moving, respectful (funny).... made me wonder why we couldn't have that in this fair land.... well done NZ - you were first to figure out that women deserved the vote and here you are leading the way again with marriage equality... bravo!

now lets just try to get our mob to see the light....

    1. Ronnie, yes, wasn't that a great speech. I wasn't expecting that from him but it was great. Our fair land is sometimes not so fair. But still wonderful in many other ways.

Sadly here in the US we still have a long [ish] way to go...

  7. Anna, yes, I fear we have a longish way to go in Australia, too. It is sad but we will prevail in the end.
